What's A Foreign Trade Zone?

A Foreign Trade Zone is an area inside or adjacent to a US Customs Port of Entry which is deemed to be outside the US Customs Territory.

What Are Its Advantages?

US Customs duties are deferred on goods while they are in the Foreign Trade Zone.  If exported out of the US, no duty is ever due.  If imported into the US, the duty is paid only the value of the final products transferred out of the Foreign Trade Zone.  While in the Foreign Trade Zone, goods can be stored, repackaged or manufactured without duty.

How Can You Use A Foreign Trade Zone in Nevada?

Every year, an increasing number of US companies relocate their warehousing and distribution systems from California and other States to Nevada due to its lower tax and operating cost environment.  It is simply less expensive to store goods in Nevada and ship them to the end user point as required, than to store them at the California and other end user points.  An importer into the US can apply this concept in conjunction with a Foreign Trade Zone by using Las Vegas as the port of entry and warehousing here in a Foreign Trade Zone.  This will yield both less expensive storage and deferred customs duties.  This can further be combined with use of US materials or packaging to further reduce the ultimate US Customs duties burdens.
